Would you Adam & Eve it?

It would appear that a creationist museum will open in Kentucky, showing dinosaurs frolicking with Adam and Eve. The Bible, apparently is the true word of God, presumably sent down by a heavenly version of texting seeing as there have always been arguments as to the exact nature of the translation of the Bible. You would think that God, in His infinite wisdom, would be multi-lingual and send down versions with simultaneous translation thus sparing scholars much pedantic discussion.

What intrigues me is why the Bible is the Ultimate Source of creation. Why not some other holy book? What's so indisputably certain about the Bible? If evolution did not occur at all, what colour were Adam and Eve, and how come we have morphologically different men and women in different parts of the globe? Didn't they evolve along with their climatic circumstances? If humans evolved thus, why didn't any other evolution occur?

Why is it that just because some folks cannot understand how cells evolved in different ways that they didn't do this? Hey, I don't understand how people solve maths problems about trains travelling at certain miles per hour, but I would never dream of suggesting that those who can are crazy and delusional.

Creationism is cosy, yes, but that doesn't mean it's True. It just seems to be based on 'I don't understand how evolution could happen, therefore it ain't true'.

What tickles me most is that the creationist museum curators will have nothing to do with Intelligent Design which is Creationism without the crazy literal Bible element. They still have the 'I don't understand anything so it can't be true thinking', of course.

Ah, religion. I wonder what Buddhists think. Who created their universe?

  1. Yes, Sarah - geological time is a hard concept to understand. There's simply so much of it.

This perspective on Earth history may help to put the sheer amount of time involved into tangible context.

And the term 'history' almost isn't long enough to cover it ...

  2. It seems to me that the Bible is the perfect document for the pathologically arrogant. God made Man to reign over women, animals and the world. Therefore, they can be used and abused at will. Everything is subservient to the will of men, and his survival is the most important of all survival issues.

  3. One gets the impression that most of those promoting these absurd notions on creationism (or its watered down version they call intelligent design) are white Americans. I would ask them this: what colour do they imagine Adam and Eve to have been ?

  4. Exactly Colin. I asked that same question in my post.

The notion is gaining ground in the UK too, I'm sorry to say.

  5. Oops yes, so you did, Sarah. Teach me to re-read something after sleeping on it. Still, great minds ... as they say. Or there's a more disturbing possibiity - that all of one's "original" thoughts are someone else's , having undergone incubation, and a convenient erasure of who wrote it and where.

I'd better start preparing my defence for St Peter (or the agnostic/atheist equivalent thereof) against the charge of closet plagiarism.

  6. Ouuuuuups: What can true blue catho's say about this? Just keep quiet, I think!

  7. No, come on, NG. Let's be hearing what "blue cathos" think about it. I for one would be interested to hear. Rome, after all, has never taken so literal a view of scripture as the Protestants. In fact, The Vatican did not allow bibles into its hurches for a long time, as I recall, believing that to do so would cause no end of problems with folk it considered half-educated. Maybe they were right !

  8. Gosh, Colin, I think you're on to something there!

  9. To me, the Bible would have a lot more credibility as the supposed word of God if it could have told our forefathers something they didn't know. Like the Earth is round, or there used to dinosaurs, or the air is 1/5th oxygen, that all that oxygen comes from green plants etc.
Instead it offers no enlightment whatsoever about the natural world. It's exactly the kind of document one might expect from folk living a largely pastoral existence. It lacks obvious signs of divine inspiration. Put another way, it has human fingerprints all over it. The Jesuits etc with their keen minds were well aware ot its inconsistencies and other shortcomings. No wonder Rome felt the need, at least in the Middle Ages, until the Rennaisance era, to keep it under lock and key.

  13. Well, I for one have only just this minute done so, beepbeepetc. I'm not really into the "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin' school of speculation, but I did enjoy your Garden of Eden joke. Hope you won't object if I reproduce it here (seeing as how Sarah needs some cheering up after her Paris trip):

Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, so God asked Adam, “What is wrong with you?” Adam said he didn’t have anyone to talk to. God said he was going to give him a companion and she would be called woman.

God said, “This person will cook for you and wash your clothes, she will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will not nag you, and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you’ve had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give “love” and compassion whenever needed.” Adam asked God, “What will this woman cost?” God said, “An arm and a leg.” Adam said, “What can I get for just a rib?”

    The rest is history…

PS Hippo is preparing his magnum opus, shortly to be unveiled on my blog. It's his plan to save the world. Clue: the answer lies in the soil (as that old yokel used to say on the radio in my youth, with "lies" pronounced "loys", and "soil" as "sawyul".

  14. I think that joke is very funny.

I do agree, Colin, that the Bible just presents knowledge that was available at the time, and nothing blatantly ahead of its time, such as the idea that the earth is round. It is so obviously the work of the guys at the time, although, certain bits were left out. Perhaps those contained incomprehensible stuff such as the earth turning around the sun...

  15. "God made Man to reign over women"

Exactly, so who gave you permission to blog, you lowly woman?

Just kidding (in case you couldn't tell).
