Daily Prompt Wittering

Today's Daily Prompt from Wordpress is a question that I can answer straight off without even thinking:
You’re stranded in a foreign city for a day with no money and no friends. Where do you go; what do you do?

Easy peasy! I'd go to the Tourist Office. There I'd get a list of places I can visit for free, and I'd also ask if there were any shops that offered tastings although I can't imagine being stranded somewhere with absolutely not a farthing at the bottom of my purse.

Otherwise, I'd try and copy that stupid woman in the Kinder Chocolat advert. She goes into a mini supermarket and decides she needs a snack before doing her shopping. She goes to the counter and sees one bar of Kinder Chocolat. The guy behind the counter sees that, standing behind her is that tennis player, whatsisface, big guy, dark-skinned, you know, anyway, Kinder Chocolat is his favourite and he wants the last bar too. Shopper 1 doesn't want cookies or cake or anything else, fussy cow that she is, so Counter Man suggests that she and TennisMan share it.

So all I'd have to do would be to go into a mini-mart, hide all the Kinder Chocolats bar one, and then wait for TennisMan to show up (Tonga, is it?). They we could share the last one unless some busybody were to find my hidden horde and then the game would be up guv. Or I could just nick one and run really fast because these days thieves can act with impunity practically, or so it seems, and I'm quite fit with all that zumba.

Back in reality, visiting the Tourist Office is something my DB and I usually do when we arrive somewhere where we intend to spend a day or two. We also go there for accommodation lists and advice and then just use the internet to pin down our choices.

When I was actually stranded in Paris for a day with little money, I had a lovely time. I had a programme of visits which included a bit of the Louvre, and the Maillot Musée to see a Weegee exhibition; I had a bistro lunch and took the train back to Montpellier at the end of the day. I even got to blog about it here.

Nowadays, if I've got my Kindle I'm a happy bunny wherever I am, and if it's just for a day, I can go without food too although I'd get decidedly grumpy.

  2. Great post! Wifried Tsonga, his name is (gosh- talk like Yoda, I do). I blogged about that ad on my blog - I hate Kinder adverts. http://multifariousmeanderings.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/kinder-bueno-or-how-not-to-use-music-in-t-v-commercials/
I f you have more time to waste, I also had a bash at their tupid lady in the train on my French blog: http://ruminationsdunevachefolle.wordpress.com/2012/11/08/linvitation-douteuse-de-mlle-kinder/

    1. I nearly had it right. I could have googled it of course, but couldn't be fagged. Glad I'm not the only one to hate the adverts. It quite put me off Tsonga too as he comes across as a total idiot which I'm sure isn't the intention!

I often have time to waste, I'll have a look at your French blog post. :)

  3. A perfect answer, Sarah. If it were me and I could find a really great art gallery or museum with free entrance, I could probably miss lunch without noticing it. :-)

    1. Absolutely, especially if I'd pigged out on breakfast. :)

  4. You are so pragmatic Sarah! I have no idea what I would do. I think that I would just make it up as I go along.

  5. I'm like you, as long as I have something to read I'm happy.

    1. Absolutely, and a Kindle can be so full of books, it's unlikely you'll run out of something to read in a single day. :)

  6. And may I add, tourists offices are a great place to exchange foreign currency. You're less likely to get ripped off as you would be at the airport or bank.

We tried to exchange several hundred Kuwaiti Dinars at Miami International airport during a layover last summer. The company wanted to give us half of what the actually exchange rate was. Current rate for Kuwaiti Dinar to US dollar-3.57. They wanted 2.57, a substantial difference, resulting in a huge profit for them and a massive lose for us.

The tourist office offered 3.10 which I thought was fair.
